Help
This is an application to assist you in using the correct finger placement when typing. Basically, you type into the text box on the right, and we compare your finger placement with where your fingers "should" be as you type. When you're done typing, we show you where you could improve.
To start with, you'll need to calibrate your camera and your keyboard. This application requires a webcam facing downward toward your keyboard. We have to see your fingers! Press the "Configure Camera" button and the system will walk you through the calibration process.
Next, click the "Start ⬤" button. This will tell the system to start recording your keystrokes. Start typing, and the text that you type should appear in the box on the right. You don't need to do anything special: You can backspace, or hit the enter key. Just type normally.
When you're done, click the "Stop ⏹" button. This will prompt the system to enter a "review" mode, where you can see all the characters you pressed on the right side, and see a video of you typing on the left side.
In the text review area, you can hover over the characters to advance the video to the exact moment when you typed that character. Use the < and > keys to move forward or backward single frames in the video.
In the text review area, the text is color-coded to show how our system flagged it. Black text is flagged "correct" - you used the correct finger on that key. Red text is flagged incorrect - we think you used the wrong finger on that key. Blue text is flagged "unknown" - we're confused about this key.
We may incorrectly flag some keys. PLEASE REVIEW ANY INCORRECTLY-MARKED KEYS IN THE VIDEO!!! If we wrongly marked a key as "incorrect", we apologize, but this system is *not* perfect, so it is meant as an "assistant" rather than an automated grader. Hopefully even our imperfect system will help you find ways to improve your typing!
Align Keyboard
Please move the camera and/or keyboard until it the part of the keyboard including the digits, the spacebar, and the shift keys fits within the rectangle shown. The detection works best if the camera is slightly "ahead" of the keyboard, so that it is looking back toward the fingers - this will make the keyboard look like a trapezoid, with the longer edge at the top.
Register Keys
The dots should all be in the center of the main keys on the keyboard (from backquote in the top left, to shift on the bottom right). If ANY of the dots are NOT well-aligned with the centers of keys, please reconfigure the key locations.
